Planning guide
Iceland ring road hotels: our night-by-night picks
Route 1 loops 1,332 km around the island. A comfortable self-driven ring road takes seven to ten days, three hours of driving on the longest day. Here is where to sleep each night, with the honest reasoning per stop.
The rules of a good ring road
- Drive clockwise. Reykjavík to South Coast first, saving the Westfjords detour for later trips.
- Keep drives under three hours per day. Iceland’s roads look short on the map; the ring road is 1,332 km of switchbacks and 90 km/h speed limits.
- Book two nights in Vík and two nights in Akureyri. Every other stop is a one-night.
- Add 15 to 30 percent to Google Maps drive times. The estimates are optimistic for the ring road, especially the east fjords.
- Do not skip Egilsstaðir. The east is the quietest ring road stretch and the reindeer country.
7-day ring road: hotel picks per night
Night 1: Reykjavík
Iceland Parliament Hotel, $340, downtown. Or Grandi Hotel by Center Hotels for the harbour angle. Arrival day, don’t book anywhere further than 30 minutes from Keflavík.
Nights 2-3: Vík í Mýrdal
Hotel Kría, $260, hot tub with sea view. Two nights so you get Reynisfjara at sunrise and Dyrhólaey at an unhurried pace. Drive from Reykjavík: 2h 45.
Night 4: Höfn or Hotel Jökulsárlón
Hotel Jökulsárlón, $280, 10 minutes from the glacier lagoon and Diamond Beach. Drive from Vík: 3h 15.
Night 5: Egilsstaðir
Icelandair Hotel Herað, $220. Long drive day (3h 30) through the east fjords, arrive tired, restaurant on-site. Drive Höfn to Egilsstaðir: 3h 30.
Nights 6-7: Akureyri (via Mývatn)
Icelandair Hotel Akureyri, $230, or Hotel Kea, $200. Two nights so you can day-trip to Mývatn. Drive Egilsstaðir to Akureyri via Mývatn: 4h 30 with stops.
Night 8 (fly-out day)
Domestic flight Akureyri to Reykjavík (45 minutes) beats the 5h drive back if you can time it. Book a Keflavík airport hotel if the flight lands late; Hotel Berg Keflavík is the reliable pick.
10-day ring road: what changes
The 7-day loop is honest but tight. The three extra nights buy you: one more in Vík (three total, one full day for Þórsmörk), one in West Iceland at Hotel Húsafell (Snæfellsnes day trip), and one at Frost and Fire in Hveragerði on the drive back to Reykjavík.
