South Coast hotels: where to stay from Hella to Höfn

The 380 km stretch from Hella to Höfn (pronounced Herpn) is Iceland’s photographed heart: Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara, Jökulsárlón. It is also the country’s strongest dark-sky belt for aurora viewing, which is why lodges like Rangá and Hotel Jökulsárlón exist.

How to base yourself on the South Coast

Two working models. Either drive it in a day and sleep in Reykjavík (viable only for Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss), or split it into two hotel nights: one in Vík, one further east near Jökulsárlón or in Höfn. The two-night model is our default recommendation, and it is what our 7-day itinerary assumes.

Hella / Hvolsvöllur

90 minutes east of Reykjavík. Base for the western waterfalls and Þórsmörk day trips. Hotel Rangá is here; so is the newer Hotel Fljótshlíð.

Vík í Mýrdal

2h 30 from Reykjavík. Reynisfjara black-sand beach, Dyrhólaey. The default overnight for a two-day South Coast run. See Hotel Vík í Mýrdal, Hotel Kría, Umi Hotel, Magma.

Jökulsárlón / Höfn

4h 30 from Reykjavík. Glacier lagoon, Diamond Beach, Vatnajökull. Hotel Jökulsárlón puts you 10 minutes from the ice; Höfn hotels sit an hour further east.

The best South Coast hotels

  1. Hotel Rangá – Aurora country lodge near Hella. On-site observatory, wake-up call service, from $380 shoulder season. Iceland’s aurora icon. Read the review.
  2. Hotel Kría – Newer Vík hotel, hot tub with sea view, from $260. Editor’s pick for a first Vík overnight.
  3. Umi Hotel – Vík, 10 minutes east on Route 1, quieter, from $240.
  4. Hotel Vík í Mýrdal – The older mid-range Vík option, walking distance from the church viewpoint, from $220.
  5. Magma Hotel – Kirkjubæjarklaustur, halfway between Vík and Jökulsárlón, hot tub view of Systrafoss, from $250.
  6. Hotel Laki – Kirkjubæjarklaustur, farmhouse-style with restaurant, from $230.
  7. Hotel Jökulsárlón – 10 minutes from the glacier lagoon, midway between Vík and Höfn, from $280.
  8. Frost and Fire Hotel, Hveragerði – 45 minutes east of Reykjavík, hot-spring on-site, from $210. Not strictly South Coast but the natural first stop.

Aurora on the South Coast

The South Coast is Iceland’s most reliable aurora belt for hotel guests. Dark-sky quality is excellent from Hella eastwards, and Vík’s Reynisfjall ridge blocks most residual light pollution. Peak season is September to April. Hotel Rangá runs the country’s best wake-up call service; Hotel Jökulsárlón sits under some of Iceland’s darkest sky.
