Borgarnes hotels: the gateway to Snæfellsnes
Borgarnes is where you sleep when you want to be on the Snæfellsnes peninsula by 09:00 or in the Westfjords by lunchtime. The town itself has one museum worth an hour and three hotels worth the reservation.
Borgarnes sits 74 km north of Reykjavík on the ring road, on a spit of land in the Borgarfjörður fjord. It is home to the Settlement Centre (Landnámssetur), a small saga museum that runs the best 45-minute Icelandic history primer in the country. Most travellers stay here as a stepping-stone to Snæfellsnes (Route 54 west), the Westfjords ferry (Stykkishólmur), or the Húsafell hot-spring drive inland.

Three hotels worth booking
Icelandair Hotel Hamar
The four-star on the golf course three minutes south of town. 66 rooms, aurora-viewing from the northern rooms in winter, a restaurant that punches above its price.

Hotel Borgarnes
The in-town 76-room mid-range option. Views over the fjord, five-minute walk to the Settlement Centre and the good bakery. Rooms 220 through 232 face the water.

B59 Hotel
The newer 88-room design-forward pick opened 2019. Concrete-and-timber build, in-house steakhouse, better for a couple than a family.

Three practical notes
1. The Settlement Centre is 90 minutes well spent
Landnámssetur runs two 30-minute audio tours (one on the settlement of Iceland, one on Egill’s Saga). Together they explain more of what you will see on the ring road than any guidebook. Combined ticket under $25.
2. Deildartunguhver is 25 minutes inland
Europe’s highest-flow hot spring is 25 minutes east on Route 50. Adjacent Krauma spa is the honest hot-tub alternative to the Blue Lagoon at a third of the price and no queue for a locker.
3. Ferry timings drive the plan
If you are heading Westfjords, the Baldur ferry from Stykkishólmur sails at 09:00 in summer (once daily). That means Borgarnes at 06:30 checkout and the 88 km drive to the Stykkishólmur harbour.
