Kirkjubæjarklaustur hotels: the ring-road midpoint
Locals call it Klaustur. It sits 71 km east of Vík and 133 km west of Jökulsárlón, which makes it the most useful sleep stop on the long southern stretch. Two hotels do the job well.
Kirkjubæjarklaustur (pronounced Kirk-yu-buy-ar-klöystur, meaning church farm cloister) is a village of 200 people set between the Skaftá river and the Systrafoss waterfall. It has one main street, one fuel station, one grocer, and two proper hotels. On a ring-road loop it is the sensible way to break the 273 km stretch from Vík to Höfn into two shorter drives, each around 2 hours.

Two hotels that make sense
Hotel Klaustur
The Icelandair-owned hotel on the main road. 57 rooms, comfortable if unadventurous, on-site restaurant that stays open until 22:00. The reliable choice on a fixed ring-road plan.

Fosshotel Núpar (10 km east)
A newer 43-room build under the Fosshotel group, sat under the Núpar cliffs. Quieter, better breakfast, worth the extra ten-minute drive if you have a car.

Hunkubakkar Guesthouse
The farm-stay pick, 10 km west. Wooden cottages on a working farm, shared kitchen, aurora sky if the forecast lands. Best for two-night stays.

Three practical notes
1. Fjaðrárgljúfur is 10 minutes north
The canyon Fjaðrárgljúfur, made famous by a Justin Bieber video, sits 10 minutes north on Route 206. It closes seasonally for erosion recovery, so check the Environment Agency site before you drive up.
2. The lava field east is Iceland’s largest
Eldhraun, the moss-covered lava field east of the town, is the largest lava flow in recorded human history (1783 Laki eruption). Do not walk on the moss; recovery takes a century.
3. Petrol here or gamble
The N1 in Klaustur is the last real fuel station before Höfn 200 km east. There is a card-only unattended pump at Skaftafell 65 km on, but count on Klaustur or arrive with three-quarters of a tank.
