Iceland ring road itinerary: seven nights, night by night
The honest ring-road plan is seven nights, not five. Two nights on the South Coast, one at Jökulsárlón, one in Egilsstaðir, two in the North, one in the West. A picked hotel for each.
The 1,332 km Route 1 loop is drivable in five days if you push it. Seven nights is the honest recommendation: it lets you spend an unhurried afternoon at Reynisfjara, sleep near Jökulsárlón for sunrise, cross the east fjords in daylight, and stay two nights on Mývatn without a rush. Three hotels that anchor the loop
Umi Hotel (Vík, nights 2 and 3)
Two nights near Vík is the plan’s single most important call. Umi’s black-sand-facing rooms give you Reynisfjara at sunrise and Dyrhólaey without the day-trip drive from Reykjavík.

Hotel Jökulsárlón (night 4)
One night near the glacier lagoon gives you the golden-hour boat tour and sunrise at Diamond Beach the next morning. Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon is the alternative if this books out.

Siglo Hotel (Siglufjörður, night 6)
The former herring capital in the North with a Michelin-nod restaurant and a harbour-view hot tub. Better than a second Akureyri night if the drive works.

Three notes for the drive
1. Google is optimistic; add 20 percent
Google Maps drive times on Route 1 assume perfect conditions. In practice, add 15 to 25 percent for wind, wildlife, and photo stops. The Vík to Höfn stretch (273 km) budgets 3h 20 in Maps and takes closer to 4h 30 with two stops.
2. Rent a 4×4 for October to April
The ring road is 2WD-passable in summer. October through April, book a 4×4 with studded winter tyres; the cost premium is $30 to $50 per day and it is the difference between reaching Egilsstaðir on a snowy afternoon and turning back.
3. Book the east-coast nights first
Höfn, Egilsstaðir, and Seyðisfjörður have limited hotel inventory. When you build the plan, lock the east-coast night first, then work backwards through the South Coast and forwards through the North. The east books out four months in advance in July.
