Selfoss hotels: the working town on the way east
Selfoss is not a destination town, it is where you sleep when you want to drive east at first light. Three hotels earn a stay, and one of them (Hótel Selfoss on the river) is genuinely worth the reservation on its own merits.
Selfoss sits 57 km east of Reykjavík on Route 1, roughly 50 minutes from Keflavík airport. It is the largest town in South Iceland and the last full-service stop (supermarket, bakery, pharmacy) before the ring road empties toward Vík. For most travellers it is a one-night base to break the drive to Jökulsárlón or a soft first-night landing after a red-eye. The bakery on Austurvegur opens at 06:00.

Three hotels worth booking
Hótel Selfoss
The riverside four-star with the geothermal spa. Rooms above the Ölfusá river, a decent hot tub, and a walkable position to the new old-town square.

Hótel Örk (Hveragerði, 15 min west)
Not technically Selfoss, but the geothermal-town alternative if you want a proper pool complex and pay a little less. 84 rooms, mini golf, the works.

Guesthouse Garun
The budget-honest guesthouse pick. Shared bathrooms, quiet street, ten minutes on foot to the bakery. Good for solo travellers doing a long ring-road loop.

Three practical notes
1. The bakery is the meeting point
Kaffi Krús on Austurvegur is where the locals actually eat, and where the ring-road drivers stop for coffee before pushing on to Vík. The kleinur (twisted Icelandic doughnut) is worth the detour.
2. Fill up here, not later
Selfoss has the last Bónus supermarket and full-price N1 fuel station before the coast opens up. Groceries at Bónus are 30 to 40 percent cheaper than the Vík Krónan and the last Kringlan-scale petrol is here.
3. Secret Lagoon is 25 minutes north
The Secret Lagoon at Flúðir (Gamla Laugin) sits 30 km north of Selfoss on Route 30. Book the 20:00 slot in winter for a hot-spring soak under the aurora forecast band. Under $30, no swim-up bar, no crowds.
